Cest La Vie!

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

I love our bedroom the most but I admit I spend my most glorious moments inside my bathroom every single morning! This is where I feel most beautiful everyday. This is where I display my vanity kits that I carefully place one by one according to its purpose.

My bathroom is the place I feel so vain and where I playfully play like a queen who enjoys her world from lavish dresses, huge glamorous bed to a whole set of bathroom vanity – enjoying Jacuzzi with margarita on one hand. Cest la vie!

The charmed life of a wife like me – life is really beautiful, isn’t it?

First the makeup brushes, now the bath products! I’m totally addicted to EcoTools. This kit just came in yesterday but it has a walnut shell body scrub instead of the body mist. Hmmm, that’s why I was itching to buy the body mist; I wanted matching scents for my hand cream and body mist (that’s the OC talking). Most of them smell citrussy and minty. Right now, I’m testing the hand cream versus Bath & Body Works and Aveeno. EcoTools One Hand Helps The Other was gone the first time I washed my hands. The same happens with Bath & Body Works. So far, Aveeno is unmatched. I only have one problem with it, they don’t have it in travel size. Now I regret giving it to the hubby to keep it in the car because it’s unscented.

I’m glad I thought of testing the hand cream out before buying the full size one. Also glad to be woman… Just imagine me trying out testosterone creams had I been a man.

dark circles

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Woke up this morning and headed straight to the bathroom as usual. I noticed my dark circles again and heard my mother’s voice in my head… I shouldn’t be surprised, really, since I’ve been staying up late and forgetting to put on my special concealer. Naturally, the concealer slash eye cream for dark circles won’t work if I keep forgetting to put it on. I’m not going to waste a good eight dollars on a cosmetic item; must remember, must remember.

Because the doctor was unable to prescribe anything for my acne scars, I am forced to look for some over-the-counter product. He just gave me a topical cream that seems too common it could also be eczema treatment, for all I know. So now I have six types of concealer with different brands, applicators, shades and uses. By testing them all on my skin, I’m risking a massive breakout. But for now, sadly, there’s no other way. Looking on the brighter side, I have another reason to shop for makeup!

discontinued

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

I am not a brand-conscious person, I am more like brand loyal. I can’t help but notice though that the brands or certain products that I have learned to love keep disappearing; their production are discontinued. There are several of these products, I tell you, like the Havaianas kitten heels (which I never had the chance to get a pair of), certain Nokia phones that I fancy, books in the covers that I love, and many others. The latest addition to these discontinued items is Finesse hair products. I ran out of it a couple of months ago and settled for another brand because I couldn’t find them in stores. I thought they were just out of stock but I never saw them again. So when I found out that they are still available in an online drugstore, I bought some, along with these EcoTools makeup bags and the Almay makeup remover pads. I’ve been meaning to buy stretch marks cream or lotion, there are plenty to choose from in the market these days, but I’m afraid that when I find the perfect one for me, it would soon be gone.

acne treatment side effects

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I can’t decide whether to use the acne medication that was just recently prescribed to me by a local physician or the one that my dermatologist in the PI had sent me. Which could be more effective? Both have serious side effects and I was cautioned not to use them if I suspected pregnancy.

Since the hubby is more likely to stay than to be deployed in another country, I did some research to find out if I can take prenatal vitamins while on the acne regimen, and was surprised to find some good news. I read in an article that prenatal vitamins often cause better skin, hair and even nails, so maybe I should just start on that and forego the acne regimen hoping that the prenatal vitamins would really cause those beneficial side effects. I would also be hitting two birds with one stone: I can keep the harmful substances in my acne meds from getting into my blood stream and maybe I can sleep better, being sluggish from the vitamins. LOL!

Besides, I would not want those chemicals to be in my blood stream when I become pregnant, they can cause birth defects. :’(

Some substances like those in Accutane, for instance, have more side effects than that. They have been found out to also cause the following:

  • dry and cracking skin, lips & noses, conjuctivitis
  • bowel inflammation resulting to diarrhea, severe abdominal pains, even rectal bleeding
  • increased pressure within the skull that can cause blurry vision, headaches and nausea
  • irritation of the optic nerves, which would require a neurologist to correct (serious indeed!)
  • rashes, peeling of the soles and palms which can increase risk of infections and sunburn
  • depression
  • urinary discomfort
  • fatigue
  • decreased tolerance for contact lenses
  • thinning hair

That’s a lot of side effects, don’t you think? No wonder Accutane has become a last resort in acne treatment. It’s sad that some people had to suffer from these side effects, maybe before these studies came out; good for them there are accutane attorneys who specialize in their cases to help them file their claims.

I think I know what to do now. The choice is clear. I’d just skip the acne regimen and hope the prenatal vitamins make my skin look and behave better. *fingers crossed*

miss conception ;p

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

There are two major misconceptions about me:

(1) that I am not of legal age and

(2) that I am pregnant – talk about mis-conceptions, huh!

I was just referred to as “pretty mommy” on my other blog and I had mixed feeling about it. I felt good because someone thinks says I’m pretty (and I believed her) but I also felt bad because I know I look as heavy as a pregnant woman. I know exactly what to do to change this idea that people get, I’m just too lazy to exercise. Or I can just take the easy way out and get pregnant for real!

Meanwhile, on looking younger than I really am (yes, I think of myself that way when they ask me if I’m over 18), I don’t know for sure what gives them that idea. It may be that I’m short (I stand at 5 feet, barely), or I’m a little (maybe a lot) underprivileged  in the breast department, or maybe I wear too little makeup, or because I get my clothes from the Juniors department. Maybe I should just ask them next time before I blush from the flattery.

Anyways, with the help Redbook mag, I have found out what facial and body features make us look younger – or older – than we really are. Here is a summary of what I read:

What makes us look younger?

  • Lush eyelashes (minus 3 years) – apparently, full hair is associated with youth, that also applies to lashes. Redbook suggests using L’Oreal Lash Boosting Serum or Latisse if you want fuller, thicker, longer lashes. They are quite pricey for me so I’m now trying a cheaper alternative, Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator. I have yet to see results, I’ll update this post if it’s good.
  • Voluminous hair (minus 3 years) – I believe I have thick-enough hair
  • Thick eyebrows (minus 3 years) – I don’t have very thick eyebrows so I don’t shave or pluck them much, I sort of just leave them be, just getting rid of the strays. I’m using the Ardell product on my brows now too.
  • Plump cheeks (minus 4 years) – I sure have those because I’m chubby! Argh! Yo-yo dieting may cause sagging cheeks, while a little makeup can help achieve a fuller look.
  • Full lips (minus 3 years) – need I say more? That’s why the celebrities are getting injected on the lips so much, to get that Angelina-esque look.

What makes you look older?

  • Thick yellow fingernails (+ 5 years) – a good diet may give you better-looking nails. Meanwhile, mask it with some nail polish.
  • Chest freckles (+ 10 years) – notice how they never miss out on this when doing costume makeup for old peopel? It’s basically hyper-pigmentation so whitening products and sunscreen should prevent it.
  • Large pores (+3 years) – Guilty! I need some microdermabrasion. That’s expensive!
  • Receding gums (+10 years) – to avoid this, keep your mouth clean. If you have it, costly gum surgery and porcelain veneers are the only options. =(
  • Veiny hands (+7 years) – use a squeeze ball to grow some muscles in there and to hide the veins.

Stop it right now, if you’re doing the math on how much younger or older I look than I really am. I’m not disclosing my real age anyways. If you want to read the article on redbookmag.com, hit the link!

Vanity

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Vanity“Vanity is my favorite sin.” A very memorable quote from Al Pacino in the movie Devil’s Advocate; also used by my friend slash sister, Dulce on her piece for senior-year speech class. I remember it every time I stare at my reflection. Not just look but, take note, stare!

If you have been reading my old posts in my other blog, you might have seen this photo of our bathroom vanity already. This is my second favorite spot in our apartment (next to the walk-in closet). I love it despite its simplicity: it has a single sink with marble countertop, two drawers with storage underneath, eight bulbs (not seen in photo) and most importantly, a mirror that extends from that wall, where the medicine cabinet is fixed, to the edge of the tub. I spend hours in the bathroom just standing up before that mirror doing all sort of stuff. My husband has learned to assume that I am curling my hair or playing with makeup every time. He sometimes misses to notice something that I’m most proud of, I keep this place clean.
