Meet my new ZZ plant. Take note: NEW! (Later, you’ll know why. Please read on.)
Also known as the Money Plant (a lot of plants are called that, duh), Zamioculcas Zamiifolia or simply ZZ plant, has been the “What’s Up” indoor plant for a while now. People (green thumb or not) are loving it because it’s really easy to take care of. It is tough under indoor conditions, can tolerate low light, low water, and handles neglect well. It’s basically, a low maintenance plant. But be careful, every part of this plant is poisonous, so keep away from kids and pets. But that’s also a plus somehow because it repels pests too.
My husband’s grandma brought some from San Diego; one for each of our households about a year ago. She instructed me to water it every two weeks and give it much light. I also Googled it for care instructions. Despite this plant’s high tolerance for bad gardeners/owners, I have managed to kill it. How? First I re-potted it; I’m sure I was very careful in doing so. Then I left it outside so it could get much sunlight. Then I noticed that the stems and leaves look dry, so I watered it often. Then the leaves started to turn yellow and they looked heavy. One by one, they fell and I gave up. If you want to keep your plant alive, don’t do any of those! LOL
I seem to be a better Googler now because I have managed to trace the plant by its scientific name. I hope I got the right instructions this time and become a better ZZ owner too! I just have to keep in mind that this plant loves being ignored. Who knew you could kill a plant by smothering it?! ;p
