I was determined to tick off everything in my weekly to-do list but I’ve been having these headaches since yesterday, so I had to slow down. Like today, I was supposed to take the ironing board out and go horse-back riding, without need for equestrian apparel, all day. Just kidding; we call the ironing board  a kabayo (Tagalog for horse) back home, I’m not sure who came up with that.

Anyways, I checked the weather and it’s still going to be rainy tomorrow till Saturday. But I’m hoping to be more productive in the last days of this week. I hope I can at least produce neatly ironed clothes for hubby to wear this weekend.

Saturday morning… The hubby left early in the morning for his weekly workout and I have been moving about the house trying to do as much as I can to get our home ready for our little one. A lot of stuff still has to be unpacked and stored, I’m tempted to use the bar stool to clean the overhead cabinets in the kitchen and in the laundry room but that’s a major no-no especially now that I have a growing baby bump. So I should just find things that I can do while keeping my two feet on the ground, literally.

Later, he’d be cooking for us again… I wonder what today’s special is… ;p

Success!

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Today I was finally able to move some furniture and stuff around the house and clear the bar/counter. I’ve been meaning to do this since the year began but, well, procrastinated. Big time. I hope the hubby approves and keeps it as is for at least a week.

I really need another coffee table for the living room. But I may have to wait until the next big holiday to go buy one. Holidays are just about the best time to buy mattresses, furniture and other pricey items because stores offer great deals and lay away. Let me just check the calendar for the next one… Memorial Day. Hmmm… That’s another month away.

Clean House

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2XQp_giBjU]

Meet my new favorite show — Clean House: Search for the Messiest Home in the Country!

It’s like Hoarders and Extreme Makeover combined! It’s a lot more fun than Hoarders, hosted by a comedian with a designer, a jack of all trades and a yard sale diva on the team. It uses a lighter, less clinical approach to hoarding. And the home owners are talked into giving up some of their unnecessary possessions by bidding, trading, stuff like that. The items are put up on a yard sale and the proceeds are used to give the homes a new look and the owners a new way of life.

I lose my temper whenever the hubby is taking hours to look for simple stuff like his proof of membership in some association or life insurance policy or old credit cards, you know, things that should have been filed properly in an organizer or kept in a box. I’d probably lose my mind if I were living with the people nominated to be on the show. Imagine a life-long scavenger hunt! Argh!

I love shows like this though. It gives me motivation to clean, consolation that my house is not the messiest in the country (yet), and confirmation that somehow, I’m doing something right, because my house does not even come close to looking  like the ones featured on the show.

Yesterday, another episode of migraine kept me in bed and rendered me totally useless. All I did was order more medication for migraine and that was easy; I just picked up the phone, punched in a few numbers, and the meds are ready for pickup the next day! I didn’t even have to make a payment. That’s one of the benefits of being a military dependent (I could have saved a lot if I got married before I started popping those BCPs like some sort of acne vitamins).

Anyhoo, I read in a magazine that one way to keep yourself from slacking up is being proud of your accomplishments no matter how little. Flaunt them in your Facebook status, tweet them, or (like what I’m doing now) blog about them. Today, I’m determined to make up for all the housework I have missed and make time for some online tasks too. As I am sipping my coffee, I have already made take-away lunch for the hubby, washed the dishes, and loaded the washing machine. There’s still a lot more to be done. And if this kind of motivation works for me, at least today, you’ll be hearing more about my accomplishments tomorrow.  Chop chop, me!

Oh! And Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Patio

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

If there’s one part of our apartment that needs more attention than the others, it’s definitely the patio. I’ve been wanting to clean it up for a while. But that’s practically impossible for me to do alone because while other occupants have potted plants, garden sets, and outdoor electric grills in their patios, we have a huge box of recyclables, pots with the unlucky plants that I’ve managed to kill and an old futon. I have nowhere else to put them that the only way I can make the patio less unsightly is to hang a curtain to hide all that stuff. Thankfully, in despite of the management being particular about keeping appearances uniform and clean, they have not considered our patio as a reason to kick us out. Yet.

Bayong Evolves to Green Bag

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Way before plastic bags conquered the Earth and “green bags” or reusable totes became a trendy way to help conserve the environment, the bayong or woven bag (I’m not sure what it’s really made of) has been the Filipino households’ reliable companion to market. It’s reusable, sturdy, withstands rain and wet goods and often comes in a wide variety of colors and style.

I was surprised to see this version of the bayong in one of the racks in a local store. The handles are made to feel comfortable and long enough to be carried by the shoulder so I guess this one functions as more than a bag for going to market, eh? It’s a little overpriced for that too. I think shoppers would be more interested in using these green bags if they were promotional items rather than just merchandise.

from DVD to Blu-ray

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I think the hubby had just upgraded his DVD collection to Blu-ray. Just the other day, he spent his Best Buy rewards on a number of movies. I’m not complaining (it’s a cheap collection compared to Ferrari parts and the like); he bought Twilight and Ninja Assassin for me. My only problem is, we don’t have much space for them anymore. I’m gonna need a new DVD rack really soon. Then I can rearrange furniture. See, it’s not so bad after all!

Green is frugal

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I am unable to sleep for extended hours nowadays because of the husband’s presence in the house. LOL! He’s is off work for the entire week. While he studies for a number of exams that he has to take soon, I have to find things to do. Right now I’m joggling household chores with cuddling with the hubby, finishing my stitching project, blogging, chatting, watching tv from time to time, and reading Confessions of a Shopaholic (again).

Reading the book made me realize how I have changed from being the single spendthrift to a somehow-frugal wife. I’m somewhat like a bloodhound when it comes to finding ways or websites to earn rewards or to get freebies, clipping coupons, watching out for sales, grabbing promotional items in stores and events. We also make a little extra from recycling plastic bottles, cans and glass bottles. I save a little from reusing tins and plastic than buying canisters and boxes for storage of little things.

Found a great resource for Promotional Items : from the simple giveaway pen to USB drives to executive gifts. They claim they have a huge selection of products and that their 20 years in the business give them an edge over their competitors. But you know where they had me? They offer Eco-friendly products too. So if you want to promote your business or event and do your share in raising environmental awareness as well, give them a try.

what keeps me sane

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

While the hubby supposedly worked on his assignment, I read through my February issue of RedBook, washed three loads of laundry, sipped some Coke and made a whole pack of Japanese rice crackers disappear.

It’s totally twisted how my “wifey mode” turns on when the hubby and I stay at home because he has to do school work. I say twisted because he expects me to be on “stand-by mode”, as willing a recipient of his unlimited hugs and kisses as a stuffed animal, as opposed to my unusually energetic mood.

Anyways, Coke keeps me sane in more ways than just the supply of sugary happiness. I got my 1-year RedBook subscription free from MyCokeRewards.com. RedBook seemed to be the best magazine for my lifestyle as a newly-wed wife. It has recipes, tips on married life, fashion finds, stories, coping strategies, feng shui and more. Some articles may be more useful to me when I actually have kids than now that it’s just the hubby and me in our little family.

Getting Coke Rewards is easy. I simply entered the codes on the caps of Coke products into my account, earn points for that and claim my rewards when I have sufficient points for something I like. Last year, I got the RedBook subscription for 130 points, and just yesterday, I claimed a Marie Claire subscription in exchange for 168 points. (Hey don’t start counting how much Coke I consume!) I’m hoping the first copy is the April issue where Project Runway’s Anthony Williams’ creation will be featured.

A year’s supply of Hearst magazines in exchange for all the Coke I gulped, and all the weight I gained through that… There should also be a lot of exercise routines in those magazines.
